About us

Our Story
East Cork Beekeeping Association (ECBKA) was founded on 6 February 1968, when 53 members enrolled at the inaugural meeting. The original invitation to that first meeting recognised the need to support people interested in beekeeping, as well as the economic value of increasing honey production in Ireland.
More than half a century later, those aims remain at the heart of what we do: supporting new beekeepers, sharing knowledge and helping those who want to develop their beekeeping, whether as a hobby or a business.
Much has changed since 1968. There is now a greater understanding of the importance of bees and the wider environment, while beekeepers face new challenges, including the varroa mite and the emergence of the Asian hornet in East Cork.
Through all these changes, our voluntary association remains committed to helping bees and beekeepers thrive.
Our Members
Our members live across East Cork, from Youghal to Carrigtwohill and Conna to Cloyne. Some keep a hive or two as a hobby, while others manage larger apiaries with commercial ambitions.
What unites us is a shared enthusiasm for honey bees and a desire to learn, share knowledge and support one another.
Our members are young and old, novice and experienced. We don't always agree on the best way to tackle a particular challenge — and don't get us started on which hive is best!
What matters is that we respect one another, share our experiences and enjoy being part of a friendly community. Our regular meetings are as much about having a cup of tea and a chat as they are about beekeeping.
Supporting Honey Bees
Protecting and supporting the native Irish honey bee (Apis mellifera mellifera) is an important goal for many of our members.
A healthy honey bee population is vital to the future of beekeeping, and we are committed to learning about the challenges facing bees and sharing that knowledge with our members.
Whether you are thinking about keeping your first hive, have been beekeeping for years, or simply have an interest in honey bees, you are welcome at East Cork Beekeeping Association.
